Tree TLC: How to Tackle Storm Damage
From ice storms to tornadoes, the Midwest certainly sees its share of storm damage. If your trees take a hit during severe weather, it’s good to have an action plan in place. Here are five steps to follow when storm damage strikes:
Step 1: Look for Safety Hazards
Stay away from utility lines and always allow the utility company to handle broken limbs or tree damage around power lines. Pay attention to trees that present obvious hazards to people or property – like large, broken branches that hang over houses, sidewalks, driveways or garages.
Step 2: Assess the Damage
Carefully examine each injured tree for the type and extent of damage. Identify cracks in the trunk or large limbs and look closely for any hidden damage.
Step 3: Remove Fallen Debris
Before starting any repair work, clean up any minor debris on the ground such as twigs, branches or fallen limbs.
Step 4: Make Minor Repairs
Remove any broken branches, stubs or jagged remains still attached to the tree. Prune smaller branches at the point where they join larger ones and resist the urge to over-prune. (Don’t worry if the tree’s appearance isn’t perfect!)
Step 5: Know When to Call a Pro
If any of these scenarios apply to you, it’s time to call in a certified arborist:
1. Severe splitting of your tree’s main trunk
2. Large limbs are broken or hanging overhead
3. If your tree is uprooted or downed
4. If the injured tree is leaning on another tree or structure
