4 Tips for Picking the Perfect Tree

Stumped on what kind of tree to plant in your yard? Here are four things to think about.

MAINTENANCE

Some trees are more high maintenance than others, so consider the amount of time and money you’re willing to invest in the upkeep. Certain trees are more pest-prone, structurally weak or intolerant of environmental stresses.

Do your research or ask an arborist if you’re curious about the kind of care your tree will need.

SIZE

When you’re choosing your tree, think about the size and width it will grow to. Most trees start out pretty small but grow quickly. For reference, a tree to shade a patio should be around 15-25 feet tall, while a tree to shade a house needs to be 30- 40 feet tall.

SURROUNDINGS

Before planting, check the location of overhead power lines. Also consider things like underground water lines, septic tanks, driveways and sidewalks that may be damaged by the roots of large trees. We recommend planting your tree at least 15 feet away from your home and any paved areas.

ENVIRONMENT

Take a good hard look at the growing conditions in your area. What’s the climate like? What type of environment will help your tree thrive? Consider things like sunlight, drainage and soil pH – and if you’re unsure about all the above, talk to an arborist.
