How to Prune Like a Pro

In most cases, tree pruning can be a fairly simple task as long as you approach it at the right time and with the right tools. Here are a few things to consider if you’re thinking about taking on a pruning project:

When to Trim

  • Trees need to be trimmed or pruned regularly to ensure the health of your tree and the safety of your property. We suggest trimming once a year during the dormant season, which can vary depending on your type of tree.

  • If you’re pruning for structure and form, it’s best to wait until the leaves fall and the branches are clearly visible.

  • Pruning for clearance should be done when branches are sagging to their lowest point.

Where to Trim

  • Cuts should be made on the branch side, which grows out from the stem at the base of the branch. This protects the stem and other branches that might be growing and allows the tree to heal faster.

  • When removing tree branches, never cut the branch flush with the trunk or parent limb. Always leave a short stub to preserve the branch collar so the tree can heal over the wound more easily.

What to Use

  • Loppers: for heavy-duty cuts

  • Anvil Blades: for blunt cuts of dead branches

  • Bypass Models: for a precise cut (ideal for new growth)

When it comes to pruning, the most important thing to keep in mind is your personal safety. If you’re dealing with larger branches, or trees that come in close proximity to power lines, it’s time to call in the pros. At Arb Tech, our certified arborists are here to get the job done safely and effectively.
