Stop Pruning Oak and Elm on April 1st
We wanted to let you all know that, as of April 1st, we will stop pruning oak trees and American Elm trees. Our reasoning is because we want to help stop two fungal diseases that pruning these trees can spread: oak wilt and Dutch elm disease. Both of these diseases are spread by insects that carry the fungal infection, and pruning trees that house these insects can spread the problem.
Oak wilt can cause discoloration, wilt and defoliation. If left untreated, it can eventually kill the trees it infects. It affects both red and white oak trees, although in different ways. However, it is a destructive disease in either type of tree, often causing damage from the top down - meaning heavy branches can drop out of trees from very high up.
