Get Your Trees in Shape With These Strategies

One of the most common resolutions for the New Year is going back to the gym and getting in shape. You shouldn’t be the only one reaping the benefits of a healthier lifestyle! In honor of 2020 arriving, why not make the pledge to get your trees in better shape too? Here are some of the best ways to get your trees ready for decades to come and some of the benefits of doing so.

What are some easy ways to get your trees in shape?
Regular Checkups - You take your pets to the vet. You take yourself to the doctor (you should, at least - maybe that’s another New Year’s resolution for 2020). Your trees should receive the same courtesy. Arb Tech is Kansas City’s premier arborist, and we would love to survey the trees on your property and help you develop a plan to keep them healthy and hearty for years to come. We can give recommendations on pruning, cabling/bracing, possible risks with overhanging branches, and offer plenty of products and advice to keep trees growing strong.

Fertilizer - Trees need nutrients to grow big and strong, and a slow-release fertilizer is one of the best ways to provide it. In a natural setting, trees get most of the nutrients they need from decaying leaves and the like. Since you’re taking care of your lawn, your probably sweeping away all those tasty treats your trees need to thrive. Use fertilizer to offset that.

Mulch - One of the best ways to care for your trees is by providing them with mulch. Mulching does it all: insulating roots, keeping soil moist, and deterring pests. Get rid of the grass beneath the tree around the trunk and add about three or four inches of mulch to give it that extra layer of protection.

Water - Has it rained recently? Mature trees usually need about an inch of water per week to stay healthy, so check the weather and plan accordingly. Trees respond best to deep, steady watering, and you’ll want to avoid saturating the area directly around the trunk with water - this can cause rot and weaken the soil at the base of the tree.

What are the benefits of healthy trees?
Having healthy trees in your yard can provide a myriad of benefits. They help filter the air around your home, helping you live a longer, healthier life. They provide shade during hot months, helping keep you cool and lower some of your bills. They absorb a ton of water, providing huge benefits when rainy seasons kick in. This stops erosion of your property and can even reduce damage to your home’s foundation, saving you thousands of dollars over time. Finally, if you’re looking to sell your home sometime down the line, study after study has shown that homes with healthy trees get a significant price boost on the housing market.
