1. Don’t over prune trees.

Although pruning is an essential gardening skill, over pruning can cause health decline and structure issues. When a tree is pruned correctly you encourage healthy growth and flowering. Timing is important when pruning - some trees are best pruned in the winter, some in the spring, summer or fall.

2. Don’t fertilize mature trees.

Once a tree gets established it doesn’t need extra fertilizer -- itt will get everything it needs from the soil. Fertilizer can cause root damage and change the pH in the soil making it harder for tree roots to take up nutrients.

3. Watch your mower and weed eaters.

Damaging the bark around the base of the tree can cause numerous issues (especially in newly planted trees) the bark is the protective layer that keeps good stuff in and the bad stuff out.

4. Plant the right tree in the right place.

Some trees do well next to a house or structure, while some don't. Know how big the tree will get, what kind of sun it needs, and if it does well around your current landscape plants.
